Just because you use a SaaS platform like Microsoft 365—a service that automatically handles many different vital tasks according to industry best practices—doesn’t necessarily mean your data is backed up the way it should be.
Do you know if your SaaS data is backed up? All of it?
Whether you use Microsoft 365, G-Suite or another platform, you need to be sure. These services promise you “uptime” and “reliability” but they don’t tell you that if you delete your emails or files by mistake that they may not be able to get them back for you.
Find out everything you need to know about SaaS data continuity and the importance of backups at our upcoming webinar with Datto:
Here’s the key consideration: whereas most SaaS solutions provide reliability, this is not the same thing as a data backup.
This ensures your data is protected against system failure. For example, if a component of the infrastructure crashes, you and your team can maintain access to your SaaS data.
Backups, on the other hand, are historical copy of data that is stored in a separate location. This ensures that, in the event that your local data is deleted, encrypted by malware, or otherwise affected, you can recover your data from the secondary location.
The bottom line is that most SaaS platforms do the former and not the latter. That’s why, without arranging for a third-party data backup, you could be unknowingly exposing yourself to a number of unnecessary risks.
Data loss is often the result of poor digital security; without the right defenses, cybercriminals can easily infect an IT system with ransomware or other types of malware and compromise company data.
You may have heard that the right anti-malware solution will minimize the chance of data loss, but what about internal threats? It’s not fun to think about, but internal security threats (i.e. malicious employees) can cause just as much damage as external cybercriminals.
When it comes to modern compliance requirements, redundant data backups are critical. You’ll want to make sure you know what’s required of your industry’s compliance regulations, and make sure you have backup methods in place to meet those.
The key is to find the right backup solution to augment Microsoft Office 365’s and G-Suite’s backup capabilities.
Our recommendation is Datto.

Microsoft 365 and G-Suite have been crucial collaboration tools allowing businesses to stay productive even as their workforce is working from remote locations.
The issue is that many of these businesses have fallen into a false sense of security believing the data that lives in these tools does not have to be protected.
The truth is, cybercriminals will follow the data wherever it lives, meaning all of your business data must be backed up.
